In today’s rapidly changing world driven by knowledge, technology, and innovation, universities can no longer grow in isolation. International collaboration has become a key driver in advancing higher education, creating new opportunities for students, researchers, and society.
Under the leadership of Associate Professor Supakorn Pongbangpho, Ph.D.President, University of Phayao is actively strengthening its international presence through academic and research partnerships with leading universities in China, South Korea, and Vietnam. These collaborations are not only academic exchanges, but also long-term strategic partnerships aimed at developing human resources, research, and innovation for the future.
One of the university’s major collaborations is with Shanghai Open University in Shanghai, China. This partnership reflects a modern educational approach that integrates multiple disciplines, including liberal arts, business, technology, and environmental studies. The University of Phayao is focusing on applying digital technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to teaching and research in order to develop future-oriented academic programs.
The collaboration also provides opportunities for students and staff to participate in exchange programs and joint research projects. These experiences help strengthen communication skills, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding, which are essential skills for the global workforce of the 21st century.
At the regional level, the university has expanded its ASEAN academic network through partnerships with University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City and Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City in Ho Chi Minh City. The cooperation focuses on curriculum development and collaborative research in areas such as urban development, energy, environment, architecture, design, and creative industries.
These ASEAN partnerships not only encourage academic exchange, but also prepare students to work effectively within the regional context. In addition, they create opportunities for research collaboration that can contribute to industrial development and future economic growth.
Another significant partnership is with Gyeongkuk National University in South Korea, which aligns with the University of Phayao’s strategic direction in agricultural innovation and food security. Researchers from both institutions have exchanged knowledge in agricultural technology, plant breeding, and livestock research, with the goal of applying these innovations to strengthen local communities and the economy of Phayao Province.
Importantly, this partnership has also initiated the idea of “trilateral cooperation,” aiming to expand collaboration with universities in the European Union in the future. This vision represents an important step toward positioning the University of Phayao within a truly global academic network.
Each international partnership has been carefully designed to support the university’s strategic priorities. The collaboration with China strengthens digital learning and modern education technology; the partnerships in Vietnam support engineering, architecture, and creative industries; while the collaboration with South Korea enhances agricultural research and food security.
Together, these partnerships help the university develop quality graduates, strengthen research capabilities, and broaden international perspectives for students and staff. Exposure to different cultures, ideas, and academic approaches also plays an important role in developing global citizens for the future.
Although these collaborations begin with academic exchanges and Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), the University of Phayao’s long-term vision goes much further. The university aims to build international research networks, develop joint academic programs, promote practical innovation, and create learning platforms that connect local knowledge with global opportunities.
These efforts clearly demonstrate that internationalization at the University of Phayao is not simply about institutional image, but about creating sustainable value for students, communities, and society. Through these partnerships, the university is building a bridge of opportunity that connects local development with the global stage, preparing for the future of education, innovation, and sustainable development in the 21st century.
