The School of Science at the University of Phayao continues its mission to serve the community by sharing knowledge and innovation to improve the quality of life for the elderly in the Ban Tom sub-district municipality of Phayao province.
🍃 Turning Leaves into Fertilizer, Turning Waste into Food
On January 16, 2026, a team of experts from the School of Science, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Sugunya Suebsan, Dr. Kanta Sangwijit, and Mr. Prajak Khatthi, expanded their project by conducting a hands-on workshop on "Composting Unshredded Leaves with Microbial Innovation and Cultivating Straw Mushrooms." The workshop was attended by 60 senior citizens at the Ban Tom sub-district municipality office.
The initiative focused on applying innovation to daily life to generate income and promote good health. The instructors demonstrated and guided participants through the practical steps of making compost from unshredded leaves, a process accelerated by the use of microbial innovation. Additionally, they taught techniques for cultivating straw mushrooms on top of the compost piles, creating a source of safe, homegrown food for the community.
