School of Public Health, University of Phayao, organized a community engagement activity to preserve and promote local wisdom by teaching primary school students (Grade 4–5) at Betty Dumen Border Patrol Police School, Phachangnoi Subdistrict, Pong District, Phayao Province, how to make “Yao Herbal Compress with Riceberry.” The initiative aims to foster knowledge and understanding of traditional herbal practices for basic healthcare while encouraging the development of community-based products that could generate future income.
This activity showcased the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the local wisdom of the Iu Mien ethnic group, who have long been known for their expertise in herbal medicine. A key ingredient highlighted was “Jian Hob” or “Jian Khrua,” a local medicinal herb valued for its ability to relax muscles, relieve aches and pains, and improve blood circulation. Combined with antioxidant-rich riceberry, the result was a special herbal compress formula offering benefits for both health and commercial use.
During the activity, students were taught the entire process of preparing, wrapping, steaming, and applying the compress safely. They also learned about precautions for use, particularly for patients and the elderly. Emphasis was placed on hygiene and proper storage methods to ensure safe reuse. Local teachers and village wisdom keepers were invited to join the program and share their knowledge, instilling cultural pride and reinforcing the value of traditional heritage.
This initiative aligns with the University of Phayao's mission to provide academic service and transfer knowledge to society. Through the integration of education, research, and cultural heritage, the university showcases the potential for sustainable community development.
