From 9–11 July 2026, researchers from the School of Business and Communication Arts, University of Phayao, participated in the ABC Academy III: Capacity Development Program for Area-Based Research Managers, held at the Asia Hotel Bangkok, Ratchathewi, Bangkok.
The University's representatives included Dr. Piyapong Supanyo, Associate Dean for Research Innovation and Network Development; Dr. Jaruwan Posayanon, Assistant to the President of the University of Phayao; and Ms. Nawaporn Ketsuwan, Lecturer in the Bachelor of Communication Arts Program in Communication Management. They participated in the workshop as members of the third cohort of the ABC Academy program.
The program is designed to develop the competencies of participants as Area-Based Research Managers, equipping them with the knowledge, understanding, and practical skills required for effective area-based research management. Participants are expected to integrate research, technology, and innovation to drive area-based development efficiently, respond to local contexts, and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The initiative also aims to cultivate Change Agents who are capable of managing area-based research and systematically linking research knowledge with problem-solving and local development. By integrating research findings into practical applications and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, participants are expected to generate positive impacts on economic and social development and improve the quality of life of people within local communities. The program is jointly developed and implemented by the Program Management Unit on Area-Based Development (PMU A) and the University of Phayao.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Kitti Satchawattana, Director of the Program Management Unit on Area-Based Development (PMU A), who delivered the opening address and outlined the vision and strategic direction of the program. He emphasized the pivotal role of Area-Based Research Managers as key facilitators in connecting research, technology, and innovation with practical implementation through collaboration with partner organizations, thereby promoting sustainable development at the national level.
The third cohort of ABC Academy has been developed through the collaboration between PMU A and the University of Phayao, with Professor Dr. Samoe Thanoi, Vice President for Research and Innovation, serving as the Program Director. The curriculum focuses on strengthening the capabilities of personnel from higher education institutions, government agencies, the private sector, and civil society organizations to apply Area-Based Research approaches in generating knowledge, developing innovations, and driving regional development based on evidence-informed decision-making and participatory engagement.
The program welcomed 127 participants from more than 70 organizations across Thailand. Participants were divided into two groups: the Policy-Driven Group, comprising 35 university executives, and the Area-Driven Group, consisting of 92 researchers. The first onsite workshop was conducted from 9–11 July 2026, featuring lectures, interactive workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions led by nationally recognized experts in area-based research management.
The ABC Academy III program will continue through December 2026, with the objective of developing Area-Based Research Managers who possess competencies in research management, collaborative network development, and the effective application of research knowledge to generate policy and area-based impacts. Ultimately, the program seeks to contribute to sustainable national development in accordance with the missions of the Program Management Unit on Area-Based Development (PMU A) and the University of Phayao.
