University of Phayao Drives AI Research for a Low-Carbon Future
Mathematics and Science paving the way toward sustainable innovation

The Mathematics Program, School of Science, University of Phayao, recently organized an intensive hands-on workshop under the theme “Application of Artificial Intelligence for Aboveground Biomass and Carbon Estimation Using Remote Sensing and Image Classification, and Intellectual Property Development.” The event brought together over 30 participants, including students, researchers, and members of the public, for a two-day training session held from 3–4 November 2025 at the School of Science, University of Phayao.

This workshop aimed to empower participants to become next-generation researchers, data analysts, and experts in environmental and medical technology, with strong competencies in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Through this initiative, the School of Science seeks to cultivate innovation-driven minds who will contribute to building an “Innovation Society” and promoting a “Low-Carbon Society.”

The training was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Watcharaporn Cholamjiak, lecturer in the Ph.D. Program in Mathematics, together with a team of distinguished experts, including:

Prof. Dr. Suthep Suantai

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siwat Lawanwadeekul and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nipa Jun-On

Asst. Prof. Dr. Warakhom Wongchai

Mr. Paphinwit Piamsaeng

Throughout the two-day program, participants engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions covering remote sensing data analysis, biomass and carbon quantification, and intellectual property management. The workshop emphasized interdisciplinary applications of AI for environmental sustainability, data-driven research, and innovation commercialization.

This initiative underscores the University of Phayao’s commitment to fostering research excellence and technological innovation aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to climate action, quality education, and industry, innovation, and infrastructure.

The School of Science continues to position itself as a hub of advanced scientific knowledge, nurturing human capital capable of driving transformative change toward a greener, smarter, and more sustainable future.
