Engineering Integrates Materials Science Telescope Technology and TSC-1  Satellite Manufacturing Connecting Astronomical Research with Space Innovation

The Faculty of Engineering, University of Phayao, led by Mr. Anothai Klakankhai, a lecturer in the Bachelor of Engineering Program in Industrial Engineering, organized the project entitled “Integrating Materials Science and Materials Engineering with Telescope Technology for Thai Astronomy: Connecting Astronomical Research, Technology Development, and Innovation toward Space Exploration.” The project was held on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, at the Muang Phayao Conference Room (ICT 1247), University of Phayao. The opening ceremony was presided over by Assistant Professor Dr. Wassana Naku, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Quality Assurance, who delivered the opening remarks and welcomed the participants.

The project featured a special lecture by Mr. Keerati Khamkongyu, Advisor to the 7th-Cycle Birthday Anniversary Regional Observatory for the Public, Phitsanulok, under the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Public Organization). The lecture provided participants with insights and practical experience in astronomical technology while demonstrating how engineering knowledge can be integrated into the development of advanced space technologies.

Key topics covered in the lecture included telescope technology and stargazing; the Thermal Vacuum Chamber (TVC), “DARTS,” for testing the operational conditions of research satellites; robotic spectrographs; earthquake early-warning systems; first-light testing using actual starlight; a prototype Drone Detection System; a Superconductor–Insulator–Superconductor (SIS) Mixer; the control system of the National Telescope; an automatic center-of-gravity adjustment system for satellite attitude and stability testing under microgravity conditions; magnetic-field control systems for spacecraft simulation and navigation; and the application of engineering materials in the manufacture of the TSC-1 satellite.

In addition, the project introduced and invited students to participate in the “Astrophotography with a Smartphone” training activity. The activity is designed to promote accessible and technology-enhanced learning in astronomy by enabling participants to explore astronomical observation and photography using devices that are readily available in everyday life. The activity was supported by Assistant Professor Dr. Piyachon Ketsuwan, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; Assistant Professor Dr. Chonticha Kritpetch, Lecturer in the Department of Physics, School of Science, University of Phayao; and Ms. Nawaporn Ketsuwan, Lecturer in the Department of Communication Management, School of Business and Communication Arts, University of Phayao.

The project represents another significant initiative in promoting interdisciplinary integration across engineering, materials science, astronomy, and space technology. It provided students with opportunities to learn directly from experts and gain a broader understanding of how engineering principles and knowledge can be applied in advanced technological contexts. The initiative also served as a platform for inspiring students and creating opportunities for them to participate in research projects in collaboration with the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Public Organization).

Furthermore, the project contributed to strengthening research collaboration and developing a network of University of Phayao researchers in areas encompassing science, engineering, technology, information technology, archaeoastronomy, and innovation. These interdisciplinary efforts aim to enhance students’ and researchers’ capabilities and prepare them for emerging opportunities and transformations associated with the future space industry.
